NVR stands for Network Video Recorder. The camera sends video and audio signal to the NVR, which consequently sends digital signal down the standard CAT5 or CAT6 Ethernet connection cable.

So in essence, DVR uses coaxed cable and NVR uses Ethernet cabling. Some cable distances of DVR can extend up to 300ft for audio, video and powering having a distance video coverage of up to maximum 2000 ft. NVR systems supports links of up to 800ft per camera for video coverage with a 300ft cable extension for audio, video and power cabling.

NVR uses digital IP cameras and the compliance with the internet protocol allows for greater flexibility in conversing with the network, whether large or small. These IP cameras are connected using standard RG45 Ethernet connector that not only transfer the signals, but also supports power to the camera; this also called Power over Ethernet (POE). Currently, there are new technologies that require only a single cabling for wiring that serves for power, audio and video at the same time.

Both the NVR and DVR has a role to play in surveillance security systems especially when installing hidden cameras for offices and workplace, it is just a matter of picking the system that works best for you. Also take note that; not every video recorder works with every camera, DVRs usually with analog cameras, while NVRs perfectly works with IP cameras and may also work with analog cameras to an extent.
